Structures Overview

Specific structures will be covered town by town.  From an overall modelling perspective, I am using a variety of commercially available (mostly used) plastic structures, some wood craftsman kits, some card stock structure kits, and scratch built structures using styrene and commercial parts such as n scale doors and windows.

I also will be using decals to improve the look of some painted backdrop structures. For buildings that would begin right at the edge of the backdrop such as yard served undustries, I will be using building flats addixed to the backdrop.

I will eventually weather all of the commercial and scratch built buildings and add details to improve the look, but that is likely to be later after railroad operations have begun.

For scratch built buildings, I have started experimenting with using a Cricut Maker.  I have determined that it is definitely able to cut walls with window and door openings in the styrene using the knife blade, but I have not yet determined the most ideal settings for the material or if the blade will get dull and need replacing too soon to justify this technique from a cost perspective.

For most buildings, I am satisfied with buildings that are appropriate to the period and location without exactly matching actual buildings that were present on the prototype.  However, there are anywhere from one to a half dozen signature buildings in many of the towns that I will want to scratch build in order to represent the actual historical building.  These are buildings such as Lamie’s Tavern and the Odd Fellows Building in Hampton, NH, various depots including in North Conway NH, etc.  Many of those will wait and the sequence in which they are constructed will likely reflect their complexity so I can continue to improve my techniques before getting to the more complex buildings.  This probably means North Conway depot sitting right at the edge of the layout on the top level will probably be the last structure I build many years from now.

A partial list of planned structures that will be modelled to look like the prototype and status are:
